How to Make an Airbnb Bed That Photographs Well
To make an Airbnb bed that photographs well, start with a smooth mattress protector and a tight fitted sheet, center a freshly steamed or shaken out duvet with equal overhang on both sides, stand the pillows upright in a fixed order and finish with one folded throw across the foot. The secret is less about fancy bedding and more about doing the exact same layers in the exact same order every turnover.
The bed is the hero shot in almost every listing, and it is the first thing a guest compares to your photos when they open the bedroom door. If the bed in person looks flatter, lumpier or different from the listing, the guest notices. Here is how I teach cleaners to make a bed that matches the photos every time.
What makes a bed look good in photos
Before the steps, it helps to know what the camera and the guest are reacting to:
- Clean lines. Straight edges along the sides and foot of the bed.
- Symmetry. Equal overhang on both sides, pillows centered, nightstands matching.
- Volume. A duvet with a full insert and pillows that stand up look inviting. Flat pillows look tired.
- No wrinkles on top. Small wrinkles show up far more in photos than in person.
- Color contrast. White bedding against a darker headboard or wall reads as clean. A single throw or pair of shams adds a point of color.
What you need
- Mattress protector that fits the mattress depth
- Fitted sheet (deep pocket if your mattress is thick)
- Top sheet, if you use one
- Duvet insert and duvet cover, or a comforter
- Sleeping pillows with pillow protectors and pillowcases
- Optional: two shams or decorative pillows and one throw
- A handheld steamer or spray bottle of water for wrinkles
- A lint roller
I keep bedding simple: white sheets and duvet covers, the same set in every room of the same size. It makes laundry faster and the beds look consistent. If you are building your inventory, see how many sets of sheets and towels an Airbnb needs.
Step by step: making the bed
1. Reset the base
- Check the mattress protector is clean and pull it tight so no wrinkles show through.
- If the mattress has handles or a pillow top that shifts, square it to the frame.
- Straighten the bed skirt if you use one so it hangs evenly on all sides.
2. Fitted sheet
- Put the fitted sheet on one top corner, then the diagonal bottom corner, then the remaining two.
- Run your hand from the center outward to push out slack.
- Check the seams sit on the underside of the mattress edge, not on top.
3. Top sheet (optional)
- Lay it finished side down so the nicer side shows when folded back.
- Line the top edge up with the head of the mattress.
- Tuck the foot under the mattress and make hospital corners: lift the side of the mattress, tuck the hanging sheet at the foot, fold the side up at an angle, tuck the lower part, then drop the fold down for a clean corner.
- Leave the sides untucked if you are using a duvet on top, or tuck them for a tighter look.
4. Duvet
- Turn the duvet cover inside out. Reach inside, grab the two far corners, then grab the corners of the insert through the cover.
- Shake the cover down over the insert. Fasten the ties or buttons.
- Shake the whole duvet firmly from the foot of the bed so the insert fills the corners.
- Lay it centered, with equal overhang on both sides. Measure with your hand if you need to.
- Steam or mist any fold lines and smooth them with your palm.
- If using a top sheet, fold the duvet and sheet back together about a hand's width at the head.
5. Pillows
- Put pillow protectors on first, then pillowcases, with the open end facing the outside edge of the bed.
- Plump each pillow by pushing the ends toward the middle a few times.
- Stand sleeping pillows upright against the headboard, or lay them flat, whichever matches your listing photos.
- Place shams or decorative pillows in front in the same order every time.
6. Finish
- Fold the throw in thirds and lay it across the foot of the bed, centered.
- Run a lint roller over the duvet and pillows. Dark throws show lint the most.
- Step back to the doorway and look at the bed the way a guest will first see it.
The bed photo standard
Write down your standard with a reference photo from your listing. This is what I include:
| Detail | Standard |
|---|---|
| Overhang | Equal on both sides, checked by eye from the foot of the bed |
| Duvet surface | No visible wrinkles, no lumps at the corners |
| Pillows | Same count, same order, same angle as the reference photo |
| Throw | Folded in thirds, centered across the foot |
| Nightstands | Lamps centered, nothing extra on the surface |
| Lint and hair | None visible in daylight or with a flashlight |
When a cleaner can see the target, the bed stops depending on who made it.
How to photograph the bed after a turnover
Completion photos serve two purposes: they tell you the bed is ready, and they give you a dated record if something is later damaged or a guest disputes the condition. For both, consistency matters.
- Stand in the same spot each time, usually the doorway or the foot of the bed.
- Turn on the lamps and open the curtains.
- Hold the phone at chest height and keep it level.
- Take one wide shot of the whole bed and nightstands, and one close shot of the pillows.
Clyn is built around this step. Your cleaner takes the bed photos in the Clyn app, and Clyn's AI checks each one against your reference, flagging a missing pillow, an uneven duvet or a wrinkled cover before the guest checks in. If a photo is too dark or blurry to judge, it gets sent back for a retake. For the full list of shots to request, see what photos to ask your Airbnb cleaner for.
Common mistakes
- Duvet insert too small for the cover. The corners go flat and the bed looks sad. Match the insert size to the cover.
- Mixed pillow sizes. One fat pillow and one flat one throws off symmetry.
- Too many decorative pillows. They take time every turnover, and guests often throw them on the floor. Two shams or one accent pillow is plenty.
- Skipping the lint roller. Lint and hair on dark accent pieces are easy to miss and show up clearly in guest photos.
- Bedding that changed from the listing. If you swap duvet covers, update your listing photos so expectations match.
Training a new cleaner on your bed standard
Make one bed together, then have the cleaner make the next one while you watch. Take a photo of their bed next to your reference and talk through any differences. After that, their completion photos do the checking. For more on this, read how to train an Airbnb cleaner.
FAQ
What bedding looks best in Airbnb photos?
White or light neutral bedding tends to photograph as clean and bright, and it is easy to keep consistent across rooms. Add one point of color with a throw or shams if you want the room to feel warmer.
How do you keep a duvet from looking lumpy?
Use an insert that matches the cover size, secure the corners with ties if the cover has them, and shake the duvet firmly from the foot of the bed after putting it on. A quick steam removes fold lines.
Should I use a top sheet in my Airbnb?
It is your choice. Some guests expect one and some do not. Pick one approach, keep it the same in every room and show it in your listing photos.
