What Photos to Ask Your Airbnb Cleaner For After Every Turnover

Diana MuturiaSeptember 30, 2026

Ask your Airbnb cleaner for a consistent set of photos after every turnover: a wide shot of each room, close ups of beds, toilets, showers, sinks, counters and stovetops, the inside of the fridge and microwave, restocked supplies, outdoor areas, and any damage or left items. Take them from the same angles each time, in good light, so you can compare turnovers and prove the condition of the home if a guest claim comes up.

When I started hosting, I asked my cleaner to "send a few pictures." I got four blurry photos of the living room. None of them showed the shower, which is where the guest found hair. The fix was not a better cleaner. It was a clear shot list.

Why turnover photos matter

Photos do three jobs for a host:

  1. They confirm the home is ready. You can check the work before the guest arrives, especially when you live far away.
  2. They make feedback specific. "The shower glass has water spots, see photo" is easier to hear than "the bathroom was not great."
  3. They are your evidence. Airbnb asks hosts to file a damage reimbursement request within 14 days of the guest's checkout, supported by photos or videos, estimates or receipts (Airbnb help: damage protection). A dated photo showing an item was fine after the previous turnover is the strongest proof you can have.

The room by room shot list

Adapt this to your property, then keep it the same every time.

Every room

  • One wide shot from the doorway showing the whole room
  • Floors, including under beds or tables if guests tend to drop things there

Bedrooms

  • Each bed, straight on, showing pillows and the top sheet or duvet
  • Nightstands and lamps
  • Inside of closet or wardrobe (to confirm nothing left behind and hangers set)

Bathrooms

  • Toilet with the seat up, showing the bowl
  • Shower or tub, including the drain and glass
  • Sink and counter
  • Mirror
  • Towels staged
  • Toilet paper and toiletries restocked

Kitchen

  • Counters and sink
  • Stovetop
  • Inside of fridge
  • Inside of microwave
  • Dishwasher emptied
  • Coffee station and restocked basics

Living areas

  • Sofa and cushions (a close up catches hair and crumbs)
  • Coffee table and TV area, with remotes in place

Outdoor areas

  • Patio or balcony
  • Grill, if you have one
  • Hot tub or pool area, if you have one

Final reset

  • Thermostat setting
  • Front door locked or lockbox set
  • Anything you have asked for specifically, like the welcome note or the wifi card

Exceptions

  • Damage, with a close up and a wide shot for context
  • Stains or marks on fabric, walls or floors
  • Items guests left behind
  • Anything running low that needs a restock

Photo quality rules

A photo that is dark or blurry proves nothing. Share these rules with your cleaner:

RuleWhy
Turn on all lights and open blindsDark photos hide dust, hair and stains
Hold the phone steady and tap to focusBlur makes a photo useless as evidence
Same angle every turnoverLets you compare one turnover to the next
Show the whole itemA cropped bed hides the corner that was not made
Shoot after the clean, not beforeYou want proof of the finished state
Close up plus wide shot for damageOne shows detail, the other shows where it is
Keep timestampsDates matter for claims

An easy trick: take your own reference photos of each room staged exactly how you want it. Share them with your cleaner as the target. They will naturally match the angle.

How many photos is enough?

Enough to show every area on your checklist, and no more. For a small apartment that might be 20 or so. A large home with outdoor space will need more. The goal is coverage, not volume. Fifty random photos are harder to check than 25 consistent ones.

If you are building the checklist that goes with these photos, start with the Airbnb inspection checklist.

How to ask your cleaner for photos

Photos take time, so treat them as part of the job:

  1. Put the shot list in writing and include it in your cleaner agreement. See what to put in an Airbnb cleaner agreement.
  2. Include photo time in the price. Photos and reporting add minutes to every turnover.
  3. Explain why. Cleaners are more willing when they know photos protect them too. A clear record shows they did the work if a guest complains.
  4. Give feedback on photos kindly. If shots are dark or missing, say so early. My guide on how to give your cleaner feedback without losing them has wording that works.

Where to store turnover photos

Photos in a text thread are hard to find three weeks later. Keep them organized by property and date so you can pull up the turnover before any given stay. Options include a shared cloud folder with one subfolder per turnover date, your turnover or cleaning app, or a tool built for the job.

The most important thing is that you can quickly answer: "What did this room look like right before this guest checked in?"

Checking the photos without spending your evening on it

The weak spot in any photo system is the host. If you manage several properties or turnovers land on the same afternoon, scrolling through every photo is a real time cost, and misses slip past.

This is exactly what Clyn does. Your cleaner takes the photos in the Clyn app, and the AI checks every photo against your property's standard. Blurry or dark photos get sent back for a retake on the spot. Anything missed, like an unmade corner or a hair in the shower, gets flagged while the cleaner is still on site. You get a pass or a fix list, and every turnover is saved with a date. That dated record is ready if you ever need it for a damage claim. For how to use it, see how to prove guest damage on Airbnb.

FAQ

Should Airbnb cleaners take before and after photos?

After photos of the finished home are the priority. Add before photos of anything unusual, like damage, stains or a big mess, so you have evidence of what the guest left.

How long should I keep turnover photos?

At least long enough to cover any damage claim window and any guest dispute. Many hosts keep them for the full year or longer, since storage is cheap and older photos help show an item's history.

Can I require my cleaner to take photos?

Yes, if you agree on it upfront. Put the shot list in your cleaner agreement and account for the extra time in their pay.
