Can You Get an Unfair Airbnb Review Removed?

Diana MuturiaSeptember 30, 2026

You can get an Airbnb review removed only if it breaks Airbnb's Reviews Policy, for example if it is fake, retaliatory, irrelevant, tied to extortion, or violates the content policy. Airbnb's help center states that you cannot remove reviews yourself, and a review that is simply harsh, a low star rating, or the guest's honest opinion will stay up, so for most unfair reviews your real tools are a strong public response and better records.

Below is what the policy covers, how to make a request, and how to protect yourself for next time.

What Airbnb will remove

Based on Airbnb's Reviews Policy, these categories can qualify:

CategoryWhat it means in plain termsExample
FakeNot based on a real reservationA review from someone who never stayed
IrrelevantNot based on the reviewer's first hand experience, or unrelated to the stayA review about a different property or someone else's stay
Deceptive or manipulativeInvolves coordination, extortion, incentives or pressure to influence a reviewA guest threatening a bad review unless you refund them
Conflict of interestWritten by someone directly affiliated with or competing with the listingA competing host reviewing your place
RetaliatoryWritten to punish someone for enforcing a policyA guest reviewing you badly because you reported damage or a party
Content policy violationExplicit, discriminatory, harmful or illegal contentA review with slurs or personal information

The extortion rule is worth knowing well. The policy says users may not "threaten a negative review as a means to obtain unwarranted compensation." If a guest messaged you something like "refund me or I will leave a one star review," save that message. It is the clearest kind of evidence you will have.

What Airbnb will not remove

According to the same policy, these generally stay:

  • Reviews where you only disagree with the star rating
  • Reviews that mention things outside your control, such as neighborhood noise
  • Subjective opinions, even ones you think are unfair

So "the guest said the bathroom was dirty and it was not" is usually a disagreement about a subjective opinion. That does not mean you are stuck; it means the tool is your response, not a removal request.

How to request removal

The policy says requests go through Airbnb's resolution tools, where you pick the violation reason and add supporting documentation. The exact screens change, so start from the Reviews Policy page and follow the current link to report a review.

To give your request the best chance:

  1. Pick one clear policy reason. Match your case to a single category above. A request that says "this is unfair and also retaliatory and also fake" is weaker than one that names the rule and shows proof.
  2. Quote the relevant part of the review. Point to the exact sentence that breaks the rule.
  3. Attach evidence. Screenshots of messages, dated photos, the timeline of events.
  4. Keep it short and factual. The person reviewing your request is reading many of these. Make it easy.
  5. Stay polite if you follow up. One clear follow up with any new evidence is better than several frustrated messages.

Evidence that actually helps

For retaliation or extortion

  • Screenshots of guest messages showing threats or demands
  • The date you reported a rule violation, damage or an issue, compared with the date of the review
  • Any case number from a related claim

For fake or irrelevant reviews

  • Proof the reservation did not happen or was for a different listing
  • Details in the review that clearly describe a different property

For cleanliness disputes

Photos alone will not usually get a subjective review removed, but they matter in two ways. First, if the guest also asked for a refund or filed an issue, dated photos from the turnover support your side. Second, they let you respond publicly with confidence. A dated photo record also matters well beyond reviews, for example in proving guest damage.

This is one reason I built Clyn. After each turnover your cleaner takes photos in the app, the AI checks them against your standard and flags anything missed, and every set of photos is saved with a date. If a guest later says the home was dirty, you know whether it really was, and you have a record that was made before they arrived.

When removal is not possible

Most unfair reviews will not qualify. Here is what still works.

Write a calm public response

Airbnb shows your response alongside the review. Future guests read both, and a composed reply often reassures them more than the review worries them. Keep it to a few sentences: thank the guest, address the specific point, say what you checked or changed. There is a full guide with examples on responding to a bad cleanliness review.

Let the guest know what you fixed

If the review had a real point, a short private message saying you fixed it is fine. Airbnb's help center notes that a published review stays up unless it violates the policy or its author asks for removal within 30 days of publication, per the reviews article. Do not ask, pressure or offer anything in exchange for removal; the Reviews Policy prohibits incentives or pressure to influence a review, and that could create a bigger problem than the review itself.

Dilute it with good stays

A single low review matters less as recent five star stays accumulate. Focus on the next ten turnovers. Consistent, checked cleaning is the most reliable way to get there; see how to get five star cleanliness reviews.

Fix the underlying pattern

If the same complaint appears in more than one review, the issue is your process, not the guests. Look at what was missed, update your checklist, and add a check before check in.

Timing matters

Airbnb's reviews article explains that both host and guest have 14 days after checkout to write a review, and reviews publish when both are submitted or the 14 days end. Use that window:

  • If a stay went badly, save messages and photos right away, before you need them.
  • Write your own review of the guest honestly and factually.
  • If a guest threatens a review during the stay, report it then rather than waiting.

FAQ

Will Airbnb remove a review because it is unfair?

Not on unfairness alone. Airbnb's Reviews Policy removes reviews that break specific rules, such as fake, retaliatory or extortion related reviews. Disagreements with star ratings or subjective opinions generally stay.

What counts as a retaliatory Airbnb review?

The Reviews Policy describes retaliatory reviews as those written to punish someone for enforcing a policy. A guest leaving a bad review after you report damage or a house rule violation is a common example. Keep the timeline and messages as evidence.

Can a guest take down their own review?

According to Airbnb's help center, a published review stays up unless it violates the Reviews Policy or its author requests removal within 30 days of publication. You can tell a guest what you fixed, but you should not pressure them or offer anything in return.
