How to Get 5 Stars for Cleanliness on Airbnb

Diana MuturiaSeptember 29, 2026

You get 5 stars for cleanliness by winning on the details guests notice in their first ten minutes: the bed, the bathroom, and anything that shows a previous guest was there. Airbnb's own cleanliness standard is simple. The home should be free of health hazards like mold and pests, and free of extensive dust, pet dander, and dirty dishes. (Airbnb Help Center) Guests hold you to a much higher bar than that.

The first ten minutes decide the score

Guests walk in, drop their bags, and do a quick inspection. They check the bed, the bathroom, and the kitchen, usually in that order. If they find one sign of the last guest, every other small flaw starts to count against you.

The spots that cost hosts stars most often:

  • Hair. On pillows, in the shower drain, on the bathroom floor, in the sink.
  • Smells. Towels that were not fully dried, a trash can that was not rinsed, a fridge with old food.
  • Crumbs. In the toaster, under couch cushions, in the silverware drawer.
  • Fingerprints. On mirrors, glass shower doors, the fridge, and the TV.
  • Leftovers from the last guest. A sock under the bed, a shampoo bottle in the shower, a note on the fridge.

None of these take long to fix. They get missed because nobody checks.

Make your cleaner's job measurable

"Clean the bathroom" means something different to every cleaner. "The shower drain has no hair, the glass has no spots, and there are two bath towels folded in thirds on the rack" means one thing.

Write your standard down room by room, then ask for one photo at the end of each room. Keep the photo angles the same every time so you can compare turnovers side by side. Our Airbnb cleaning checklist has the full list.

Check before the guest does

The difference between a 4.7 and a 5.0 is rarely your cleaner's effort. It is whether someone checked the work before the guest arrived.

Most hosts cannot drive to every turnover. That is fine. You need the photos, and you need to look at them while there is still time to send the cleaner back. A turnover you review at 2pm can be fixed before a 4pm check in. A turnover you review after the guest complains cannot.

When a guest says it was dirty

If a guest messages about a cleanliness problem, respond fast, apologize once, and fix it that day. Offer a return visit from your cleaner or a small refund. Guests who feel heard often leave a fair review. Guests who feel ignored rarely do. Our guide on what to do when a guest says your Airbnb was dirty walks through it step by step.

Then find out what was missed and add it to your checklist so it never happens again.
