How to Respond to a Bad Airbnb Cleanliness Review (With Examples)

Diana MuturiaSeptember 30, 2026

Respond to a bad cleanliness review with a short, calm public reply that thanks the guest, acknowledges the specific issue, states what you changed, and avoids arguing. Your response is written for the next hundred people reading your listing, and on Airbnb it posts immediately and appears on your listing page next to the original review, so it should reassure them that the problem is handled.

I have written these replies on my own listings and read hundreds from other hosts. The ones that work are brief and specific. The ones that hurt are long, defensive and aimed at winning the argument.

Before you write anything

1. Wait until you are calm

A cleanliness complaint feels personal, especially if you clean the home yourself or trust your cleaner. Draft a reply, then leave it for a few hours. Nothing about a review response is urgent enough to justify sending it angry.

2. Find out what happened

Look at whatever record you have of that turnover:

  • Photos your cleaner took after cleaning
  • Messages from the guest during the stay
  • Notes from your cleaner or co host
  • The review's star ratings in your dashboard

If you have dated photos showing the bathroom was clean at turnover, that changes how you respond. If you have nothing, you do not know, and you should respond as if the guest may be right.

3. Check whether the review breaks Airbnb's rules

Airbnb's Reviews Policy allows removal of reviews that are fake, retaliatory, irrelevant, part of an extortion attempt, or that violate the content policy. It does not remove reviews simply because you disagree with the rating or the guest's opinion. If you think the review does break a rule, request removal first; there is a separate guide on getting an unfair Airbnb review removed. You can still respond while that is pending.

The four part response structure

Keep it to about three to five sentences.

  1. Thank them. One short line. It signals maturity to readers.
  2. Acknowledge the specific issue. Name it plainly: "hair in the shower," "crumbs in the kitchen." Vague replies sound like copy and paste.
  3. Say what you changed. This is the part future guests care about most.
  4. Close with the standard you hold. One sentence about what guests can expect.

What to leave out:

  • Blame on your cleaner by name
  • Private details about the guest or the stay
  • Anything about refunds, messages or disputes
  • Sarcasm, and long explanations

Example responses

Adapt these to your own voice and the actual facts. Never claim a change you have not made.

When the guest is right

Thank you for staying with us and for flagging the hair in the shower. That should not have happened, and I am sorry it was the first thing you saw. We have added a final bathroom photo check before every arrival so it is confirmed clean before anyone checks in. We want every guest to walk into a spotless home.

When it was a one time miss during a same day turnover

Thanks for the feedback. You are right that the kitchen was not up to our standard when you arrived; your stay followed a same day turnover and a few items were missed. We have adjusted our schedule so the kitchen gets a final check before check in. We appreciate you letting us know.

When you fixed it during the stay

Thank you for messaging us as soon as you arrived. Our cleaner came back that afternoon to redo the bathroom, and we are sorry it took part of your first day. We now check each room with photos before every arrival so this does not repeat.

When you believe the review is unfair

This is the hardest one. Stay factual and short, and do not call the guest a liar.

Thank you for your review. We take cleanliness seriously, and our cleaner photographs every room after each turnover. We reviewed the photos from before your arrival and the home was cleaned to our usual standard. We are sorry your experience did not match, and we would have been glad to send someone over if you had let us know during your stay.

Mentioning the photos is enough. You do not need to post them or argue the details.

When the complaint is about something outside cleaning

Guests sometimes rate cleanliness low because of wear, like a stained grout line or an old sofa.

Thanks for staying and for the feedback. The stains you noticed on the grout were permanent wear rather than dirt, and we have since had the grout replaced. We appreciate you pointing it out.

What a good response does and does not do

A good responseA bad response
Is three to five sentencesIs several paragraphs
Names the specific issueTalks around it
Explains a concrete fixPromises to "look into it"
Stays polite if the guest was unfairAccuses the guest
Speaks to future guestsSpeaks only to the reviewer

Fix the cause, not only the reply

A good reply limits the damage from one review. Only a change in process stops the next one. After any cleanliness complaint:

  1. Identify the room and item. Most complaints come down to a handful of spots: shower hair, bed linens, kitchen crumbs, floors under furniture.
  2. Update your standard. Add the missed item to your checklist with a reference photo of what clean looks like.
  3. Talk to your cleaner. Show them the review and ask what got in the way: time pressure, missing supplies, a new team member. See how to give your cleaner feedback without losing them.
  4. Add a check before check in. A checklist tells people what to do; a check confirms it was done.

That last step is where Clyn fits. Your cleaner takes photos in the Clyn app at the end of each turnover, the AI checks them against your standard, and you get a pass or a fix list while there is still time to fix it. It also gives you a dated photo record, which is exactly what you want when a review claims the home was dirty and you need to know whether it really was. The guide what to do when a guest says your Airbnb was dirty covers the in stay side of this.

When to reach out privately

If the guest did not message you during the stay, it is fine to send one short private note after the review: thank them, say you have fixed the issue. Do not ask them to change or remove the review, and do not offer anything in exchange for a different review. Airbnb's Reviews Policy prohibits trying to incentivize or pressure someone to influence a review.

FAQ

Should I respond to every bad Airbnb review?

Yes, especially cleanliness reviews. A short, specific reply shows future guests you took it seriously and fixed the problem. Silence can read as agreement or indifference.

Can I edit my response after posting?

Airbnb's help center says your response is posted immediately and shown with the original review. Treat it as permanent and write it carefully the first time. Check Airbnb's current guidance for any editing options.

Can I ask the guest to remove a bad review?

You can explain what you fixed, but you should not pressure the guest or offer anything to change the review. Airbnb's Reviews Policy prohibits pressuring or incentivizing someone to influence a review.
