Airbnb Bathroom Cleaning Checklist: The Spots Guests Notice

Diana MuturiaSeptember 30, 2026

An Airbnb bathroom clean should follow a set order: clear trash and used towels, apply products so they can work, clean from top to bottom and dry to wet, finish the toilet last, then mop, restock and stage fresh towels. Pay extra attention to the spots guests notice most: hair in the shower, drain and floor, the base and hinges of the toilet, soap scum on glass, water spots on mirrors and fixtures, and the grout lines.

Guests forgive a lot in a short term rental. A bathroom with hair in it is rarely one of those things. In my own hosting, the bathroom is where small misses get noticed first, because guests are up close with every surface there.

Why the bathroom needs its own checklist

A bathroom looks clean from the doorway long before it is clean up close. Guests, though, see it up close: sitting on the toilet, standing in the shower, leaning into the mirror. A dedicated checklist forces the close up view.

It also helps with consistency. If your cleaner follows the same order every time, nothing gets skipped on a rushed day. This checklist plugs into your full Airbnb turnover checklist.

Before you start

  • Wear gloves.
  • Use a separate color of microfiber for bathrooms only, so bathroom cloths never touch the kitchen.
  • Open the window or run the fan.
  • Bring the bathroom caddy with everything in it, so there are no trips back to the closet.
  • Read product labels. Disinfectants need to stay wet for the time the label says to work. Never mix products.

Step by step bathroom checklist

1. Clear and strip

  • Remove used towels, bath mat and washcloths
  • Empty the trash and replace the liner
  • Remove any guest items and set lost items aside. See how to handle items guests leave behind
  • Clear toiletries off counters and shower ledges

2. Apply products

  • Spray the shower, tub and glass with bathroom cleaner
  • Apply toilet cleaner under the rim
  • Spray the sink and counter

Letting products sit while you do other steps saves scrubbing later.

3. Top to bottom, dry to wet

  • Dust the exhaust fan cover, light fixtures and top of the mirror
  • Wipe door handles, light switches and cabinet pulls
  • Clean the mirror and any glass with glass cleaner, checking at an angle for streaks
  • Wipe the counter, sink and faucet, including around the base and handles
  • Polish fixtures dry so there are no water spots
  • Wipe inside drawers and cabinets guests can open

4. Shower and tub

  • Scrub walls, floor and tub surround
  • Clean the grout lines and caulk, looking for dark spots
  • Clean the shower head and handles
  • Scrub the glass door and track, or wash the curtain and liner
  • Pull hair out of the drain cover and the drain itself
  • Rinse everything and squeegee the glass

5. Toilet last

  • Scrub the bowl and under the rim
  • Wipe the tank, handle and lid, top and underside
  • Wipe the seat, top and underside
  • Wipe the hinges and bolt caps, where grime and hair collect
  • Wipe the base and the floor around it
  • Clean behind the toilet and the wall next to it

6. Floors

  • Vacuum or sweep first to lift hair, especially corners and behind the door
  • Mop, starting at the far corner and working out
  • Check baseboards for hair and dust

7. Restock and stage

  • Toilet paper on the holder plus spare rolls
  • Hand soap, body wash, shampoo and conditioner topped up
  • Fresh towel set for each guest, folded the same way every time
  • Clean bath mat
  • Tissues and trash liners
  • Hair dryer back in place and working

Your full refill list lives in the Airbnb restocking checklist.

8. Final look

  • Stand in the doorway, then sit on the toilet and look around at guest eye level
  • Look at the floor with a flashlight at a low angle to spot hair
  • Turn off the fan or leave it running a little longer if the room is still damp
  • Take the final photos

Photo standard for the bathroom

Photos are how you confirm the bathroom was done right when you are not there. Ask for the same shots every time:

  1. The whole bathroom from the doorway
  2. The toilet with the lid up, showing the bowl and base
  3. The shower or tub, including the drain
  4. The sink and counter
  5. The mirror
  6. The towel setup
  7. The floor behind the door

Consistency is the point. When every photo is taken from the same angle, a missed spot stands out.

How Clyn checks the bathroom

This is where Clyn fits naturally. Your cleaner takes these bathroom photos in the Clyn app, and the AI checks every photo against your property's standard. Blurry or dark photos get sent back for a retake, which matters in bathrooms with poor lighting. If there is hair in the shower, a missing towel or a streaky mirror, it gets flagged while the cleaner is still onsite, so the fix happens before the guest arrives. You get a pass or a fix list and a dated record of how the bathroom was left.
