What to Do When Your Airbnb Cleaner Doesn't Show Up
When your Airbnb cleaner doesn't show up, confirm it is a true no show with a call and a text, then immediately call your backup cleaner, and if nobody can get there in time, message your incoming guest early with a clear new check in time. Whatever happens, do not let a guest walk into a unit that has not been cleaned, because a dirty arrival is costly to fix after the fact.
I have been on the receiving end of the "are you on your way?" text with no reply. The hosts who handle it calmly are the ones who decided what to do before it happened. Here is the plan I use.
The first 30 minutes
1. Confirm it is really a no show
Call first, then text. People miss texts while driving, and a call gets through faster. Check the obvious:
- Did the turnover actually reach their schedule? Look at your calendar sync or turnover app.
- Is it possible they are at the wrong property if they clean several of yours?
- Did they message you on a different channel?
- If you have a smart lock, has their code been used today?
Sometimes a "no show" is a cleaner running 45 minutes late. That changes your plan completely.
2. Work out your real deadline
Write down three times: guest check in, the time a clean must start to finish before that, and the time you must message the guest if nothing is confirmed. For example, if check in is 4 and a turnover takes three hours, cleaning must start by 1. If you have no confirmed cleaner by noon, you message the guest.
3. Call your backup, then your backup's backup
This is where a pre arranged backup pays for itself. Call in order:
- Your named backup cleaner
- Other cleaners who have worked the property before
- A local cleaning company that does short notice cleans
- A co host or trusted person nearby
- Yourself, if you are close enough
Offer a short notice premium without being asked. It makes a yes much more likely. If you do not have a backup lined up, build one this week using how to build a backup cleaner plan.
If nobody can clean before check in
Message the guest early
A guest who gets a message at noon saying check in will be 6 instead of 4 will usually be understanding. A guest who arrives at 4 and waits outside without warning will not. Be honest, be specific and offer something.
Example message:
"Hi Maria, I want to give you a heads up. We had an unexpected staffing issue with today's cleaning, and I want the place to be fully ready for you. Your new check in time is 6pm. If you would like to drop bags earlier, [option]. I am also refunding [amount] for the inconvenience. I am sorry about this and will message you the moment it is ready."
Things you can offer:
- A partial refund or credit for the delay
- Luggage drop at the property if the space allows
- A local cafe or restaurant recommendation nearby
- A later checkout on their last day
Know what the guest is entitled to
Airbnb's Rebooking and Refund Policy covers stays where the accommodation is "not reasonably clean and sanitary" at check in, and guests are asked to report issues within 72 hours of discovery (Airbnb: Rebooking and refund policy for homes). If the guest arrives to an unclean home, Airbnb may refund or rebook them, and that affects your payout and likely your review. A delayed but clean check in is a much better outcome than an on time dirty one. For what happens if it gets that far, see guest wants a refund for a dirty Airbnb.
Cancelling is the last resort
If the property truly cannot be cleaned, a host cancellation brings fees and consequences. Airbnb's policy lists fees of 50% of the reservation amount for the nights not stayed when a host cancels 48 hours or less before check in, with a $50 minimum, and it can also block the calendar and affect Superhost status (Airbnb: Host cancellation policy). Check the current policy before you decide. In practice, a delayed check in with a credit is almost always better for everyone.
After the guest is settled
Talk to the cleaner, calmly
Once the crisis is over, find out what happened. There is a big difference between a family emergency, a scheduling mix up and someone who simply did not come. Ask:
- What happened today?
- How can we make sure I hear from you earlier next time?
- Is the schedule working for you, or is something about the job not working?
A first no show with a real reason and a quick apology is usually worth one more chance. A second one, or no contact at all, is usually your answer.
Write it down
Note the date, what happened and what it cost you (refund, premium paid to the backup, your time). If this becomes a pattern, you will have a clear record, and your cleaner agreement should say what happens after repeated no shows.
Check the rushed clean
Short notice cleans are where things get missed. If a backup cleaner or you did the turnover in a hurry, check it before the guest arrives. Photos help when you are not there. With Clyn, whoever cleans takes photos in the app and the AI checks them against your property's standard, so a backup cleaner who has never seen your place still gets flagged if the coffee station was not reset or the shower still has hair in it.
How to prevent the next no show
Most no shows come from a handful of fixable causes.
| Cause | Fix |
|---|---|
| Turnover never reached their schedule | Automated calendar sync or turnover app, plus a weekly schedule confirmation |
| Last minute bookings | A clear notice rule in your agreement and a short notice premium |
| Cleaner overbooked with other hosts | Ask about their weekly load and give them your schedule early |
| Cleaner unhappy with pay or conditions | Review rates yearly and ask for their feedback |
| Nobody to cover sick days | A trained, paid backup cleaner who knows your property |
Use a day before confirmation
A simple habit: the day before every turnover, the cleaner confirms by text or in your turnover app. No confirmation by a set time means you call. This one step catches most problems while there is still time to fix them.
Build buffer into your calendar
If your listing allows same day turnovers every time, one no show becomes an emergency. On busy weekends, consider how your check in and checkout times and minimum stays protect your window. I cover this in how to schedule Airbnb turnovers without gaps or overlaps.
FAQ
Should I clean the Airbnb myself if the cleaner doesn't show?
If you live nearby and can finish before check in, yes. Keep a copy of the checklist and reference photos so you reset the property to the same standard your guests expect.
How much should I pay a backup cleaner for a last minute clean?
There is no standard amount. Many hosts pay their normal turnover rate plus a short notice premium. Agree on the premium in advance so there is no negotiation on the day.
Should I tell the guest the cleaner didn't show up?
Be honest without oversharing. "We had an unexpected staffing issue with today's cleaning" is enough, paired with a new check in time and what you are offering to make up for it.
